The assessor establishes the estimated market value for property tax purposes, classifies property according to use, and oversees the appeal process.

New construction is viewed the year the structures are built. Existing properties are viewed at least once every five years as required by Minnesota law. This ensures property records are accurate and valuations have been estimated fairly.

The estimated market value must be in compliance with the standards established by Minnesota Department of Revenue and Minnesota statutes.

Applying for Homestead

If you wish to apply for homestead, you may use either of the two application processes listed below. The first option below is the preferred process.

1. Apply online at For online application, you will need to attach a scanned copy of your Certificate of Real Estate Value and a copy of your proof ownership. Proof of ownership is usually a Warranty Deed, Limited Warranty Deed or a Contract for Deed. 

2. Print a copy of the application the the above site and mail it along with a copy of your proof of ownership and Certificate of Real Estate Value to:

Please utilize one of the two options above, not both. You may no longer apply for homestead at City Hall. Hennepin County has implemented this limited application process for security reasons. 

If you bring a homestead application to City Hall, the staff cannot accept the application. you will be given an addressed envelope for you to mail your application direct to the Hennepin County Assessor's Office.
